Assistant Manager – Logistics Operations & Performance
Group Bayport • Gandhinagar, Gujarat • 6–9 years experience
About Group Bayport
Group Bayport is a global e-commerce business that designs, manufactures and ships custom-printed products — banners and signage, outdoor furniture covers, shades, home décor and personalised accessories — through its own brands, including BannerBuzz, Covers & All, Vivyx Printing and Circle One. We manufacture in India and the United States and sell to customers in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
We despatch close to 78,000 parcels a month, almost all of them international, against a delivery promise of three to four days. The business is growing from around $250 million towards $500 million in revenue, with new manufacturing and despatch locations planned in Gurugram, the United States and Dubai. We are a team of more than 1,450 people.
About the role
This role is for somebody who wants to run a fast international despatch operation and own the numbers behind it.
Roughly two-thirds of the job is day-to-day operations: making sure every shipment leaves correctly built, correctly documented and on time, every carrier deadline of the day is met, and anything that goes wrong is closed the same day. The shift supervisors run the floor hour to hour; you own the result and you are the first person they escalate to when a shift cannot resolve something on its own.
The remaining third is the department's reporting and analysis — the numbers behind that operation and the explanation of why they moved. As you establish yourself, you take charge of all logistics reporting, with the MIS team reporting to you.
What you will do — operations
- Act as the first escalation point for the despatch operation, on a weekly rotation with two other Assistant Managers. When a shift supervisor cannot resolve something, it comes to you — and it closes with you.
- Own how our daily air shipments are built: parcels consolidated correctly onto master air waybills so that we are not paying for weight or space we did not need. This is one of the biggest cost levers in the department.
- Make sure every carrier deadline of the day is met — the early morning despatch, the afternoon connections to Mumbai and Delhi, and the evening departure — whichever shift happens to be running.
- Manage the daily working relationship with FedEx, UPS and Emirates: pickups, capacity, holds, re-bookings and missed connections — and hold them to the commitments they make to us.
- Drive every shipment exception to closure: lost-shipment tracers, parcels running past their expected delivery date, undelivered shipments, customs holds and returns — within the same shift or the next, with a recorded reason in every case.
- Clear the blockages that sit outside logistics — goods not ready from production or packing, export documents pending, vehicles not placed by the transporter — on the same day they arise.
- Set the working standard with the shift supervisors, check that it is being kept, and catch problems before they reach senior management.
- Be on the floor across shifts often enough to know what is really happening, including early mornings and the evening despatch window.
What you will do — performance and reporting
- Own the department's daily, weekly and monthly reporting, and build one consolidated dashboard to replace the many separate trackers in use today.
- Agree one definition for every measure, so that different teams stop reporting the same thing two different ways.
- Do the analysis behind cost and service decisions in Excel: cost per parcel and per kilogram by brand, route and carrier; volumetric (dimensional) weight against actual weight; and carrier surcharges by type and by cause.
- Flag any number that is slipping — with the cause, the impact and a proposed fix — before anybody outside the department notices it.
- Lead the investigation into why a number moved, and follow the fix through to closure.
- Measure the savings delivered by cost-reduction projects against an agreed starting point, together with Finance.
- Over time, take charge of all logistics reporting, with the MIS team reporting to you.
What you will bring
- 6 to 9 years in export, courier, parcel or e-commerce logistics operations, with growing responsibility at each step.
- Hands-on experience with international express carriers such as FedEx, UPS, DHL or Emirates — air waybills, manifests, shipment consolidation, carrier deadlines and volumetric weight. You should be able to read a carrier invoice and explain what drove the cost.
- Experience running a daily operation and being answerable for its results, not only supervising a team.
- Strong Microsoft Excel. This one is essential, and we will look at it during the interview — large data sets, pivot tables, lookups, and building something another person can follow.
- A measure you have personally owned and improved, and can talk us through.
- Clear written and spoken communication. You will write what senior management reads, and you will present it.
- A graduate degree from a good institution. An MBA or postgraduate qualification in Operations or Supply Chain is an advantage.
- Fluent English and Hindi. Gujarati is an advantage, given the plant and transporter interface.
Good to have, but not essential
- Experience in a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), bonded warehouse or export-oriented unit, and working knowledge of export documentation.
- Power BI, Tableau or SQL. Useful, but not a requirement — what matters is the appetite to pick up whatever tool the business moves to.
- Exposure to an ERP, warehouse management or transport management system.
Who does well here
- Resourceful people. You find the way through a system that will not give you the report, a department that has not replied, or a carrier that is not picking up the phone.
- People who are ambitious and open about it. Whoever holds this operation and its numbers through the next two years of growth should expect to be running something considerably larger.
- People who are credible with those more senior than them, and with carriers — able to say a number is wrong, or a commitment was missed, with the evidence, and keep the relationship.
- People who are straight with data, including when it does not flatter their own department.
- People who build what is missing instead of listing what is missing.
Why this role is worth a look
You will own a live international operation from the start, with a clear path to running the whole performance function of the department as the business doubles in size and new locations open. You will work directly with the Senior Manager and the Head of Supply Chain & Logistics, and with FedEx, UPS and Emirates at an operational level. There is very little in this role that is routine.
